Tony Mateo was born in San Fernando (Cádiz), an Andalusian city located in the southwest corner of Spain. His grandpa has been active as tenor soloist with a choir for over 50 years while his mother sings Boleros and Spanish music. Tony showed a keen interest for singing and performing from an early age. It all started when he was six years old. Tony watched the reality show “Operación Triunfo”, the Spanish version of American Idol. Every time David Bustamante, one of the contestants, went on stage, Tony would tell his mother that he would like to be like David one day. Soon after, his mother began to coach him, correcting his singing technique and presenting him with music that matched his vocal range. He and his younger brother Abraham (who was featured here only a few weeks ago) frequently sang at home as though they were in a competition and their parents played the jury.

TONY THE PERFORMER

Tony made his first public performance in 2005, when he was eleven. He entered the “Veo Veo” talent competition, which is a contest for young talent in song and dance, organized by the Teresa Rabal Foundation. It was that performance that encouraged and motivated him to become a singer. In an interview with Tony, he tells us how he experienced that day:

“It was all too much for me because I’d never been on stage nor on television before, but I lived and enjoyed it so intensively and it made me realize what I wanted for my life: music”.

Tony participated for five consecutive years in the “Veo Veo” talent contest and was chosen four times for the regional final. Taking part at the “Veo Veo” competition was an experience that changed his life. He recalled;

“that competition gave me so many emotions and dreams, it was my beginning in music, where everything started for me, and what inspired and motivated me to become a singer”.

Also at the age of eleven, Tony made his debut on television. He auditioned for and was chosen to perform in “Menuda Noche”, a TV show aired on the local channel Canal Sur, aimed to promote young talent from Andalusia. When asked about that performance, Tony stated;

“I was very nervous because I had fever and sore throat, and even though I had to sing “Vivo por ella” (I live for her) by Andrea Bocelli, a song with very high notes, but at the end everything went well and the audience liked my performance”.

Months later, Tony performed at a special show aired by the TV channel Onda Jerez, where he sang various themes from his repertory.

Soon after these amazing performance experiences, Tony began formal vocal training with the songwriter Pedro Gordillo, who acted as his vocal coach for one and half years. Then, he moved on to a new vocal coach Rubén Cárdenas, who continued to develop his vocal abilities for an additional year. Tony learned to play guitar by ear, and, as he told us, he would like to learn play piano.

TONY THE VOCALIST

When he was fourteen, he recorded a demo containing eleven tracks, four of them original songs written by David de la Rosa and Dani Ruiz, as well as covers of popular songs by the Mexican singers Alejandro Fernandez and Cristian Castro, the Spanish singers David Bisbal, David Bustamante and Camilo Sesto, the Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi and the British singer Elton John. In some of the tracks, he collaborated with Maria Espinosa de los Monteros and Juan Carlos Arauzo, young singers from his hometown.

In 2009, Tony Mateo made his debut on national television in the reality show “Tú si que vales”, the Spanish version of “America’s Got Talent”. In the different stages of the competition, Tony performed:

“Sorry seems to be the hardest word“ by Elton John, “Angels“by Robbie Williams and “Imagina” (Imagine) by the Mexican singer Cristian Castro, achieving second place in the final show. He enjoyed that experience so much and it gave him added confidence and recognition at a national level. However, he was not happy when the producers of the show made him compete against his younger brother Abraham. The panel decided that only one of the brothers, in this case Tony, would advance to the next round.

Through the years, Tony has had the opportunity to perform in several radio stations, local concerts, street parties, and charity events in his hometown San Fernando, in Seville and other cities from Andalusia. In April 2010, he performed at the benefit concert for Yasmina, a child from his hometown San Fernando, who suffers an inherited disease of the nervous system. He and his brother Abraham recently collaborated with 50 amazing YouTube singers to perform in a music video. They covered Pray by Justin Bieber.

In 2010, Tony released his first video clip titled “Mi Rubita”, an original song written by the Andalusian songwriter Jesús Monje. That same year, he recorded at Sony Music studios in Madrid the original song “Hay alguien”, produced by Mar de Pablos. In the last two years, Tony released several cover songs in English language, performing “The Reason” by Hoobastank,“Price Tag” by Jessie J. “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz, “Ayo Technology” by Milow, “The Lazy Song” by Bruno Mars and “Sorry seems to be the hardest word” by Elton John.

Last summer, he released a cover version of “Mi Princesa” (My Princess), written by the well-known Spanish singer David Bisbal.

Recently, Tony recorded together with his brother Abraham an original track titled “En esta Navidad” (On this Christmas) and written by Jesús Monje. They dedicated this highly emotive song to their mom Susana. Speaking of his brother Abraham, who always helps him to record and produce his songs and musical videos,

Tony says: “Abraham is my inspiration and I admire him artistically and personally”.

Tony is currently recording original songs written by the Spanish songwriter Jacobo Calderon, who has worked before with internationally recognized Latin artists like Luis Fonsi, David Bisbal, and Raphael, and is also the manager of his brother Abraham. Tony has already released on his YouTube channel some of Calderon’s songs including “La sombra de tu recuerdo” and “Bajo las sabanas”. Tony hopes that his dream of releasing a studio album comes true soon and he is striving hard to achieve it.

For Tony, music is a way to say things that sometimes can’t be said using words alone. That’s why he always tries to sing using much feeling and emotion . While his greatest desire is to become a professional singer, should that not work out he would also enjoy being a teacher.

TONY THE ACTOR

In addition to singing, Tony loves acting and has already been involved in several productions. At a very early age he easily memorized movie scripts and together with his brother Abraham he imitated various actors at home. By the time Tony was fourteen, he landed his first role in “Días Sin Luz”, a TV movie based on a true, but sad story, aired in January 2009 by the Spanish television channel Antena 3. In the movie, he acted as the older brother of Mari Luz, a young girl that was abducted in Spain years ago. Tony sent a demo reel to Antena 3 Films, the movie producers, and a few weeks later was called for an audition and chosen for the role. One year later, Tony portrayed the worldwide acclaimed Spanish singer Raphael in the early years of his career. He acted in the TV movie Raphael, also produced by Antena 3 Films, and performed the song “Inmensidad” for the soundtrack of the movie.

Last year, Tony doubled the character Flynn Rider in the Spanish version of the Disney movie Tangled. He performed two songs, “Por fin ya veo la luz” (I See the Light) together with Mª Carmen López, and “Mi sueño es” (I’ve Got a Dream), in the soundtrack produced by EMI Music Spain under the direction of Jacobo Calderón. The album, recorded in Madrid at the largest recording studio in Europe, included tracks performed by the Spanish singers David Bustamante and Marta Sanchez, and was released in Spain on January 25, 2011. Tony said that experience was unforgettable for him and represents till now the most important achievement of his artistic career.

He currently studies dramatic arts in his hometown Cádiz and has acted in several school plays, for example, portraying the famous Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.

Aside from singing and acting, Tony enjoys many outdoor activities. His favorite sport is soccer. He loves watching movies and prefers suspense and horror films. Hi lists his favorite actor as Dolph Lundgren. From an early age, Tony had a passion for the songs of the Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin. His favorite food is pizza.

Tony Mateo nació en San Fernando (Cádiz), una ciudad andaluza situada al suroeste de España, en el seno de una familia eminentemente artística. Su abuelo fue solista de un coro por más de cincuenta años y su mamá canta boleros y música española. Impulsado por el hábitat artístico que lo rodeaba, desde muy temprana edad empezó a interesarse por el canto y la actuación. Todo comenzó cuando tenía seis años. Tony seguía el reality show “Operación Triunfo”, la versión española de American Idol. Cada vez que salía al escenario David Bustamante, uno de los concursantes, Tony le decía a su mamá que de mayor querría ser como él. Al poco tiempo, empezó a formarse como cantante con la ayuda de su madre, quien lo corregía y le preparaba los tonos adecuados a su voz. Muchas veces cantaba en casa junto a su hermano menor Abraham (quien fue destacado recientemente en este sitio) como si estuviera en un concurso y sus padres hacían de jurado.

TONY EL ARTISTA

Su prueba de fuego como cantante tiene lugar en el año 2005, cuando con apenas once años decide presentarse al casting de los premios “Veo Veo”, una competencia para jóvenes talentos de la música y la danza, organizada por la Fundación Teresa Rabal. Era la primera vez que Tony se subía a un escenario y, según nos cuenta él mismo, esa presentación fue lo que lo impulsó y motivó a dedicarse al mundo de la música:

“todo me venía grande porque nunca antes me había subido a un escenario ni había estado en televisión, pero lo viví y lo disfruté todo de una manera tan intensa que me di cuenta que lo quería para mi vida era la música”.

Tony participó durante cinco años consecutivos en los premios “Veo Veo”, siendo finalista de la competencia regional de Andalucía en cuatro ocasiones. Su participación en los premios “Veo Veo” fue una experiencia que marcó su vida:

“ese concurso me regaló emociones y sueños, porque constituye mi comienzo en la música, fue donde empezó todo para mi, lo que me inspiró y me motivó a dedicarme a la música y, solo por eso, siempre le tendré un cariño muy especial”.

Su primera experiencia en televisión tiene también lugar a los once años. Tony se presenta a un casting del programa de televisión “Menuda Noche” del Canal Sur de Andalucía, que promociona a jóvenes artistas de esa región, siendo seleccionado para cantar en el programa. Según nos relata el propio Tony,

“iba nerviosísimo porque estaba enfermo con fiebre y dolor de garganta y aun así tenía que cantar nada más y nada menos que ‘Vivo por ella’, una canción de Andrea Bocelli con unos tonos altísimos, pero al final salió todo bien y a la gente le gustó”.

Meses después, participa en un programa especial trasmitido por el canal de televisión Onda Jerez, donde interpreta varios temas de su repertorio.

A los trece años, comienza sus estudios formales de canto con el maestro Pedro Gordillo, con quien permaneció año y medio. Posteriormente, continúa formándose vocalmente con el maestro Rubén Cárdenas, quien continuó desarrollando sus habilidades para el canto durante un año aproximadamente. Tony aprendió por su cuenta a tocar la guitarra acústica aunque, según nos ha contado, también le encantaría aprender a tocar piano.

TONY EL VOCALISTA

Pisa por primera vez un estudio de grabación a los trece años. En el año 2008 graba una maqueta con once canciones, incluyendo cuatro temas inéditos de los compositores David de la Rosa y Dani Ruiz así como versiones de Alejandro Fernandez, Camilo Sesto, Cristian Castro, David Bisbal, David Bustamante, Luis Fonsi y Elton John. En algunos de los temas, colaboran María Espinosa de los Monteros y Juan Carlos Arauzo, jóvenes cantantes de su tierra.

Su debut a nivel nacional tiene lugar en el año 2009 en el canal de televisión Telecinco cuando participa en el reality show “Tú si que vales”, una versión del popular formato America’s Got Talent”.

En las distintas fases del concurso, Tony interpretó los temas “Sorry seems to be the hardest word” de Elton John, “Angels” de Robbie Williams e “Imagina” (Imagine) de Cristian Castro, obteniendo el segundo lugar en la gala final. Según nos cuenta Tony, ese concurso fue una experiencia que disfrutó muchísimo y que le dio mucho reconocimiento a nivel nacional. Sin embargo, no le gustó que los productores del programa lo hicieran competir con su hermano menor Abraham y que el jurado decidiera que solamente uno de los dos hermanos podía avanzar a la siguiente fase del concurso.

A largo de estos años, Tony ha participado en numerosos programas de radio, conciertos locales, verbenas y galas benéficas en su natal San Fernando, Sevilla y otras ciudades de Andalucía. En abril de 2010, actuó en el emotivo concierto dedicado a Yasmina, una joven de su ciudad San Fernando, quien padece de una enfermedad hereditaria que afecta al sistema nervioso. Recientemente, participó junto a su hermano Abraham y otros 50 talentosos cantantes de Youtube en un video donde interpretan el tema Pray de Justin Bieber.

En el año 2010 graba su primer videoclip, un tema inédito del compositor Jesús Monje que se llama “Mi Rubita”. Ese mismo año graba en los estudios de Sony Music en Madrid el tema inédito “Hay alguien” producido por Mar de Pablos. También ha publicado en estos dos últimos años versiones de canciones en inglés como “The Reason” de Hoobastank, “Price Tag” de Jessie J, “I”m Yours” de Jason Mraz, “Ayo Technology” de Milow, “The Lazy Song” de Bruno Mars y “Sorry seems to be the hardest word” de Elton John.

Durante el verano anterior grabó en estudio el tema “Mi Princesa” (My Princess) del cantante español David Bisbal.

Recientemente, grabó junto a su hermano Abraham un emotivo tema compuesto por Jesús Monje, titulado “En esta Navidad”, y que se lo han dedicado a su madre Susana. Hablando de su hermano Abraham, quien lo ayuda constantemente en la grabación y producción de sus canciones y videos musicales,

Tony nos confiesa: “Abraham es mi inspiración y mi mayor admiración en lo artístico y en lo personal”.

Actualmente, Tony se encuentra grabando canciones inéditas compuestas por Jacobo Calderón, quien ha trabajado con artistas como Luis Fonsi, David Bisbal, Raphael, y ha guiado la carrera artística de su hermano Abraham. Algunos de estos temas de Calderón como “La sombra de tu recuerdo” y “Bajo las sabanas” han sido publicados en su canal de Youtube. Tony tiene la esperanza de que su sueño de grabar un disco se vea concretado próximamente y sigue trabajando y esforzándose muchísimo para lograrlo.

Para Tony la música es una manera de decir cosas que a veces no se pueden expresar de otra manera, y solo es posible a través de la música. Por eso siempre intenta cantar con sentimiento por encima de cantar bien o mal. Su mayor ilusión es llegar a ser un cantante profesional pero si no es posible, ya que el mundo de la música es tan difícil, le gustaría estudiar para ser profesor.

TONY EL ACTOR

Además de cantar, a Tony le encanta actuar y ha tenido la oportunidad de participar en varias producciones. Desde pequeño se aprendía de memoria guiones de películas e imitaba a los actores. Tony obtiene su primer papel a los catorce años, en la miniserie “Días Sin Luz”, basada en una historia real y triste, que fue transmitida en enero de 2009 por el canal de televisión Antena 3. En la película, interpretó al hermano mayor de Mari Luz, una niña pequeña que desapareció hace un par de años y cuyo caso conmocionó a España. Tony envió a través de internet un demo a Antena 3 Films, la productora de la miniserie y a las pocas semanas lo llamaron para participar en la misma. Un año más tarde, interpreta al cantante español Raphael durante su adolescencia en la miniserie que lleva su nombre. En dicha miniserie, también producida por Antena 3 Films, Tony interpreta el tema “Inmensidad para la banda sonora.

El año anterior Tony interpretó la voz cantada del personaje Flynn Rider en la versión española de la película de Disney “Enredados”, cuyo título original en inglés es Tangled. Tony doblo dos canciones, “Por fin ya veo la luz” (I See the Light) junto a Mª Carmen López Pascual y “Mi sueño es” (I’ve Got a Dream), en la banda sonora producida por EMI Music Spain, bajo la dirección de Jacobo Calderón. El álbum, grabado en Madrid en el estudio más grande de Europa, incluye temas interpretados por David Bustamante y Marta Sánchez, y salió a la venta en España el 25 de enero del 2011. Según nos cuenta Tony, esa ha sido una experiencia inolvidable y el logro más importante que ha cosechado en su vida artística hasta ahora.

Tony actualmente estudia artes escénicas en Cádiz. Ha participado en varias obras de teatro en su escuela, interpretando a distintos personajes como el famoso poeta español Federico García Lorca.

En medio de sus ocupaciones como cantante y actor, Tony siempre encuentra tiempo para realizar actividades al aire libre. Su deporte favorito es el fútbol. A Tony también le encanta el cine. Prefiere las películas de terror y su actor favorito es Dolph Lundgren. Desde pequeño ha admirado al artista puertorriqueño Ricky Martin. Su comida favorita es la pizza.
